The Calallen Varsity Football Team won the district championship game against the Calhoun Sand Crabs last Friday.

There were eight seconds left on the clock and the game was tied, 20-20. Jaoa Trindade, the kicker, made a field goal bringing the score to 23-20, and won us the game.

“It was a really close game, but I trust my team,” Trindade said. “I knew that if we worked together, we would have a good chance of winning.”

Trindade is a foreign exchange student from Brazil, and has been a huge help to the Calallen varsity football team after only two months of playing the sport.

“I work hard during practice every day to improve on my kicking, so that I can have a better game,” Trindade said.

Varsity football coach, Coach Campbell, was very pleased by the outcome of this game although he was a bit thrown off by the plays Calhoun made.

“We prepared all week for the ‘Capital and Navy’ offense formation, which they have run for years,” Campbell said. “But they showed up and ran the ‘Capital and Eye’ formation with some of their usual plays. We were all completely shocked by this, since it was what we had practiced, but in the end, we still won the game.”

Campbell was not only proud of Trindade, but he was also very satisfied by how sophomore and safety, Justice McClure, played throughout the game.

“A lot of responsibility was put on Justice McClure,” Campbell said. “And, fortunately, he had his best game of the year and held up to the challenge.”

McClure said he tried his very best, and was very happy with the outcome of the game.

“I knew that in tough times my team would always pull through, and, as usual, they did,” sophomore Justice McClure said.

All in all, it was a very close game. Everybody played their part, and we were able to win the district championship.

“After we had all put our minds to winning and focused on working together, we got down there in enough time for a field goal,” senior/quarterback Jarrett Garza said. “We are going into our upcoming game prepared because after what Calhoun showed us, we need to be ready for any team that comes our way. At the end of the day, I believe in my boys and will always try my best.”
