After she sets up the tripod and flickers on the light, she sits down and sees the red light pop on. This is the start of a new beginning. Sitting in front of a camera on a weekly basis talking to around 80,000 people is definitely not what most would call relaxing, but to Téa, it’s her life.

“I started YouTube when I was in 4th grade because I just watched a whole bunch of videos, so I decided to start my own channel,” Junior Téa Lemay said.

Being a YouTuber takes up all of her free time, because she has to film and edit.

“I’ve given up a social life,” Lemay said. “Some of my family isn’t as supportive as I would like them to be. They keep telling me, ‘you need to do something with your life, YouTube is not going to [take you] anywhere.”

Little did Téa and her family know that later she’d be hitting 80,000 subscribers and could not be happier.

“I started gaining subscribers in June of 2017 when I posted the “Meeting my Boyfriend for the First Time” video. It has close to 4 million views now,” Lemay said. “From there, I’ve just been gaining rapidly. Before the video, I had 1,100 subs, now here I am over a year later and I have 80,000.”

Gaining subscribers and views is not the only good thing happening to her. She started getting sponsor offers from a variety of companies.

“I get to work with a lot of brands,” Lemay said. “I’ve worked with Clean and Clear, Firmoo Optical and I’m currently working with Tommy Hilfiger.”

Although YouTube does take a lot of hard work and time, Téa could not be happier that she is a YouTuber.

“It is very stressful, but it makes me happy. I would not want another job,” Lemay said. “It’s the best job I could ask for.”

Despite all the stress and long hours, Téa still finds time to acknowledge why she loves being a YouTube creator.

“My favorite part of being a YouTuber is influencing people and just making viewers’ day,” Lemay said. “Because in the end it’s the people that matter, not the money, nor me, it’s the people.”
