Students were congratulated on Monday for their academic success in Challenge Team and UIL Academics.

Rick Munoz, Austin Sannes, Caitlin Sannes, Amanda Ducek, Diego Diez, and Josh Hamiter won the 2018 Challenge Team competition making history as the second school in the Coastal Bend to win three times.

“We are extremely proud,” Superintendent Dr. Almendarez said. “Events like this bring positive recognition to yourself, community and school.”

Earning the title of “Challenge Team Champions” was no small task. The students studied constantly in and outside of school to prepare for the next rounds.

“We practiced every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday after school for an hour,” Munoz said. “We even missed pep rallies.”

Munoz said that winning the last two games was definitely the highlight.

“I was on the edge of my seat the whole time,” he said.

In the last round of the game against King, Calallen was down and Amanda Dusek was able to pick the team back up.

“It was great and I am pretty proud of myself,” Dusek said. “To hang out with friends and compete with them and ultimately be victorious with them was truly amazing.”

Ms. Day, the challenge team coach, says that the whole experience was fun and a great way to shine some light on academics.

“Its a chance for students to show their academic skills which we don’t get a chance to do here,” she said. “I am so glad we honored UIL here today because they also get a chance to compete academically.”

Misael Castillo will be competing in Current Events. He is thankful for the support he has received from Current Events coach, Mr. James. Samantha Zentz will compete at UIL State in Editorial Writing.

“I am really appreciative for everyone’s support,” Zentz said. “I am really excited and proud to be going to State.”
