Regionals for UIL Academics, including Journalism, will take place on Saturday, April 14 at UTSA. Two senior competitors, Ashlee Burns and Samantha Zentz will compete in Editorial Writing and Feature Writing. Junior ClaraGrace Pavelka will compete in Headline Writing.

The girls have been practicing and reviewing judges’ notes from past meets. This is Zentz’s first year participating in UIL Academics, but she is working hard to make her mark in hopes of advancing to State.

“I’m preparing by writing practice stories and getting constructive criticism from peers and Ms. Jimenez, our Journalism UIL coach,” Zentz said.

Burns has been competing since her sophomore year and this will be her second year going to Regionals.

“I made it to Regionals last year and I’m excited to go back this year,” Burns said. “I think we’re going to do well.”

Students who do well not only have the opportunity to compete at state and win a scholarship.

“Getting placed in the top three spots at regionals qualifies someone for state,” Zentz said. “They get scholarships automatically and a letterman jacket.”

The girls think they have a good chance of making it to state.

“We’ve done really well this year, and have placed at all of our meets,” Burns said. “I’m really looking forward to competing again this week.”
