Many new safety measures are being put into effect following the horrific school shootings occurring in public schools over the past weeks.

A newsletter has been sent out in order to notify families of the new protocols.

“The safety of our students is of utmost concern,” Superintendent Dr. Arturo Almendarez said. “The district will strive to be more transparent in our communication with parents/guardians and the manner in which we will continue to strengthen security measures on campuses.”

All campuses are already equipped with many different security measures and more are soon to be added.

“We have undergone an evaluation of our current security measures and are implementing additional safety methods,” Almendarez said. “You will continue to see changes to physical structures and procedures to further ensure the safety of our students. As security increases, current practices will be changing and may result in inconveniences that are necessary for safety.”

To ensure that students and staff are prepared for these situations, Almendarez said that all campuses will be conducting drills more frequently.

“The drills will be exercised on a frequency as determined by law and need,” he said. “All campuses will communicate with parents via Blackboard the week in which an Intruder/Active Shooter drill is scheduled, and students will be made aware that it is in fact a drill. During the execution of drills, campus access to parents/visitors will be limited or prohibited.”

The school district encourages parents to talk to their students about these new security measures in CISD.

“We believe that a strong partnership between school and home is vital in our ever-changing world and we appreciate our partnership with parents and the community,” Almendarez said.
