Special education high school students are invited to attend their private prom on Feb. 11 at the Al Amin Shrine. The dance serves as a comfortable atmosphere for special ed students to experience a high school prom and socialize with other students from across South Texas.

This prom is a free dance and this years theme will be western.

“Most times special ed students will not go to a regular prom,” Mrs.Vincent, high school teacher and volunteer, said. “The reason being they can’t afford it or they are severely special needs and they can’t physically go.”

For the special education students, this is one of the rare opportunities for them to socialize with friends.

“There is really nothing in this area for special needs kids to even go to in the summer or anything,” Mrs. Wishard,  the special education teacher, said. “There is nothing on the weekends, nothing after school, there are no places that they can go to interact and socialize.”

Ten of the special education students from CHS will be attending the prom on Saturday.

“They are so excited. They haven’t done this dance in three years,” Wishard said.

The CHS special education kids are ready to dance the night away.

“All my kids love to dance. All you have to do is turn on music no matter if you are in class or out in public and they are there dancing,” Wishard said.
