With a multitude of wins under it’s belt, it is no surprise the CHS football team will be playing off against the Victoria East Titans this Friday, December 2nd at the San Antonio Alamodome. The boys have worked hard this season, earning themselves a chance at the 2016 UIL state championship.

After a stretch of wins, including a deserving 20-7 against the Boerne Greyhounds, the Calallen players have worked long and hard to make it to where they are now.

“Our goal at the beginning of every year is to make it to the state championship,” most winningest coach Phil Danaher said.

The coaches, including Danaher, have done their part to ensure a victory against the rival team.

“Coaching-wise, we’ve spent many hours scouting [Victoria East] to see who we want to defend or attack,” Danaher said. “The game planning is very detailed. A good game plan can make the difference in the outcome of the game.”

According to Danaher, the players’ responsibity is to stay focused and understand the adjustments made for the game.

“We make adjustments with our formations,” Danaher said. “The kids here are really good at picking up those adjustments.”

Despite all the hard work and dedication put into the season, Danaher knows that a state championship victory won’t come easy.

“We’ve beat Victoria East in the past, but it’s a new team, so we can’t think we’re going to win,” Danaher said. “It’s easier to become a champion than it is to stay a champion.”
