Pole Vaulters Set New PR at District

Calallen High School’s varsity pole vaulters participated in the 5A District meet in Alice on Monday, April 10th, 2017. Eleven teams from the district competed in the events. The boys from Calallen have all qualified to participate in the next level area meet.
Garrett Hight, a junior on the track team, placed 2nd in the pole vault at the meet, falling short by one place and clearing 13’ 2.
“It is a competitive sport, and it really does suck that I couldn’t bring home the gold, but I still [broke my personal record] by almost a foot,” Hight said.
Junior Zach Jurecek, placed 3rd in the pole vault alongside Hight, who also broke his personal record with a 12’ 6”.
“I feel proud of myself for my performance today,” Jurecek said. “Great way to go out with a bang, you know?”
Nathan Velez, a sophomore, placed 4th in the pole vault and broke his personal record by a whole foot with a finishing height of 11’ 6”.
“It’s great to be able to exceed my limits and push myself to newer heights, and now we all get to go compete at area,” Velez said.
